FIELD OF FLAGS...HONORING & REMEMBERING 9-11

In honor of the victims and heroes of September 11th, Highland Memorial Park…a Place for Remembering will host the annual Field of Flags Remembrance.  This solemn remembrance will feature a field of American flags, one for each victim and emergency responder who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The flags will be lit with blue light and will be spaced so that those who wish to may walk between them.  The intent is to provide a place for our community to remember 9-11 on this, our 9th anniversary of the tragedy.

Field of Flags will begin Friday, September 10, 2010 and runs through Sunday, September 12th. Visitors are welcome from 8 am until 9 pm daily.  This is an event for the entire family.  There is no charge to attend.

On Saturday, September 11th an interactive memorial will take place in the still of the evening:  Beginning at dusk, while those nearly 3,000 flags stand in perfect rows, a multi-screen video tribute will display the story of events of and surrounding 9-11. Additionally, as part of the special commemorance, candles will be available for those who attend to light in remembrance.

What can you do to honor the memory of the victims and heroes of 9/11?

Donations will be accepted at the event to support Interfaith Emergency Services, Inc.

Additionally, Life South will be conducting a blood drive on Saturday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm inside their bloodmobile at Highland Memorial Park.  Walk-in donors are welcome, or you can make an appointment by calling Highland Memorial Park at 352.369.1020. This is a great opportunity to unite as a community to remember and honor those who lost their lives and the brave heroes that responded to the emergency on September 11th, 2001.

For additional information, please contact Highland Memorial Park at 352.369.1020.

TAKING TIME TO REMEMBER FATHERS

On Sunday, June 20, 2010, Highland Memorial Park...a Place for Remembering held a special TIME OF ROCK-SKIPPING to HONOR & REMEMBER FATHERS...Fathers who are no longer with us and Fathers who have lost a child.

Throw a pepple or a rock into a pond, the ripple created effects the water long after the pebble quietly settles out of sight.  Life is like that, too.  A life we've loved and lost can be traced back to a few small ripples...those ripples never really end; they send very big ripples into our life and into our world...and we will never forget.  To view the full photo display of this special event, please visit the Hiers-Baxley Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/HiersBaxleyFuneralServices?ref=ts

TAKING TIME TO REMEMBER MOTHERS

The MOTHER'S DAY ROSE PETAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE was a beautiful and inspiring tribute to mothers, which took place on Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Highland Memorial Park...a Place for Remembering.

Mother’s Day can be a sensitive and difficult time when your mother is no longer with you, and especially difficult for mothers who have lost a child.  Because of that, individuals and families who have lost a mother as well as mothers who have lost a child were invited to attend this special time of remembering.  At the close of the service, guests were given a single, long stem white rose.  As everyone gathered around the sparkling blue water at the Reflection Pond, guests released those silky white rose petals into the water.  As they did, each petal represented a loving message to mom, a loving message to son or daughter.  It was a beautiful and moving event for all.  To view the full display of photos, please visit the Hiers-Baxley Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/HiersBaxleyFuneralServices?ref=ts

HIGHLAND MEMORIAL DAY 2010

RECOGNIZE. RESPECT. REMEMBER...a Memorial Day Community Celebration to Honor Freedom's Heroes and to celebrate the freedom of our great country.

May 31, 2010

WOW!...what an amazing day Highland Memorial Day 2010 turned out to be; it seems to get bigger & better every year!  Our sincere thanks you to all who attended...it was a great turnout.

On Memorial Day morning, as 176 flags lined the entrance road to beautiful, historic Highland Memorial Park, cars filled with people filed one by one into the gates. At approximately 11:30 am, the posting of our nations colors started off the event followed by a patriotic wreath-laying ceremony, bagpipes, a 21 gun salute, taps, a fly-over and the “Real American Heroes” presentation.  Next, while some guests enjoyed the rock-climbing wall, gyro ride, choo-choo & inflatable slide, others took a break to enjoy complimentary hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones & lemonade.  At 1:00 pm, the 2nd Annual Highland Memorial Day Essay Contest winners were announced and the winning essays were read aloud by students.  At 2:00 pm, the stage came alive as musicians started to play & the outdoor patriotic community concert featuring singer & songwriter Norman Lee Schaffer began.  At 3:00 pm all fell quiet in observance of the National Moment of Remembrance. The Highland Memorial Day committee strives each year to honor freedom’s heroes and to increase the awareness of the true meaning of Memorial Day. We believe those goals were accomplished, for which we are grateful.  To view complete details of the event, please visit the post event web site at http://www.highlandmemorialday.com, the full photo display can be viewed on the Hiers-Baxley Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/HiersBaxleyFuneralServices?ref=ts
